Bespoke Projects — When Your Vision Needs a Skilled Pair of Hands

Not every job fits a standard service. Phil takes on bespoke projects that require genuine craft, problem-solving and experience. Tell him what you have in mind — he will tell you how to make it happen.

Some of the most satisfying work Phil does isn’t the kind that fits neatly into a service category. It’s the enquiry that starts with “I’m not sure if this is something you’d take on, but…” — followed by a description of a project that’s been stuck in the homeowner’s head for two years because no one has been willing to tackle it properly.

Phil Markides has 20 years of practical experience spanning chimneys, masonry, fireplaces, structural work and building — and he applies it to bespoke projects where the brief needs a craftsman rather than a catalogue. If you have something specific in mind and you want it done properly, it’s worth having the conversation.

What Counts as a Bespoke Project?

Bespoke work is anything designed around your specific property and requirements, rather than pulled off a shelf. Past bespoke projects Phil has taken on include:

  • Feature fireplaces built to a specific brief — combining stonework, structural modification and a finished installation designed entirely around the room
  • Bespoke garden structures in natural stone — walls, steps, seating areas, raised beds and terracing designed to suit the landscape
  • Inglenook restoration — opening up and restoring original fireplace recesses in period properties
  • Custom outdoor kitchens and firepit areas — built with the same care as indoor work, in materials that weather properly
  • Unusual structural and masonry problems — the jobs that require assessment, problem-solving and proper craft rather than a standard method

How Bespoke Projects Work

Phil visits, listens, looks at the space, and thinks about what the project actually requires. He asks the right questions, understands what the end result needs to look like, and then tells you honestly whether it’s something he can deliver and what it will take. If it is — and it usually is — you’ll get a clear quote, a realistic timeline, and the same standard of work that goes into everything else he does.

How do I know if my project is something you’d take on?

The best way is to describe it and ask. Phil is direct — if it’s not the right fit for his skills, he’ll say so, and he’ll try to point you in a better direction. If it is right, he’ll tell you that too and you can take it from there. There’s no commitment involved in an initial conversation.

Do bespoke projects cost more than standard work?

Not necessarily more per day’s work — but bespoke projects often take longer and require more careful planning than standard jobs. The cost reflects the complexity, materials and time involved, not a premium for the word “bespoke”. Phil’s quotes are honest and itemised so you know what you’re paying for.

Can you work from an architect’s drawing or my own design?

Yes. If you’re working with an architect or designer and need a craftsman to deliver the masonry, stonework or fireplace element, Phil can work from drawings and specifications. He’s used to working within a broader project team and fitting in with other trades and project timelines.
